Hiring a web developer to help with your WordPress site? Whether you need a redesign, troubleshooting, or custom functionality, you’ll need to grant them access to your site. However, security should always be a top priority. The safe way to give access to a web developer without compromising your website’s integrity is to create a new user account specifically for your developer. It is best practice to never share your personal login credentials.
You can follow the steps below to create that new account.
Step 1: Log into your website’s dashboard
To begin, access your website dashboard, make sure you have the necessary administrative privileges to grant access to other users.
• Go to Users > Add New (left column)
Enter the developer’s email address and username.
• Set a strong password (or let WordPress generate one).
• Select the appropriate role (more on this below).
• Click Add New User.
Notify your developer about their login details.
Step 2: Choose the right user role
WordPress has several user roles with different permissions:
-
Administrator – Full control over the website (use only if necessary).
-
Editor – Can manage content but not site settings.
-
Author – Can write and publish their own posts.
-
Contributor – Can write posts but not publish them.
-
Subscriber – Limited access (not useful for developers).
For most developers, you’ll need to assign the Administrator role. Roles like Editor and Author are better suited for sharing with social media and content managers.
Step 3: Secure your site before granting access
Before handing over access, it is highly recomended that you take some precautions:
-
Back up your website using a plugin like UpdraftPlus or your hosting provider’s backup tool.
-
Update WordPress, themes, and plugins to their latest versions.
-
Enable security monitoring with plugins like Wordfence or Sucuri.
